The purpose of this course is to help candidates prepare themselves for the Certified Manager of Quality/ Organizational Excellence Exam offered by the American Society for Quality. The examination is intended to test a candidate’s knowledge of all areas of information used by a modern day quality Manager. The 45-Minute essay portion of the exam will be graded on the candidate’s knowledge of quality and their skills and ability in written communication, critical-thinking, personnel management and general management.
The exam totals 4 hours. The first part of the exam requires writing 2 essays. The second part of the exam is 150 questions (including case studies). Both parts of the exam will be taken on the same day. The seven sections of the Body of Knowledge are:
1. Leadership (25 Questions)
2. Strategic Plan Development and Deployment (15 Questions)
3. Management Elements and Methods (32 Questions)
4. Quality Management Tools (28 Questions)
5. Customer Focused Organizations (20 Questions)
6. Supply Chain Management (15 Questions)
7. Training and Development (15 Questions)
The method of instruction will be to present in class, a detailed coverage of each of the areas in the BOK, followed by a discussion and review of exam type questions. The instructor will make every effort to tailor the instruction so that it relates to the actual exam and will provide feedback from previous students who passed the exam. Experience has indicated that a significant amount of out-of-class review (10 hours per week) is necessary to pass the exam.
